What is an MOT?
An MOT test is a test of your vehicle’s safety, which every car is legally required to have every 12 months. It ensures that your car is functional, safe and, of course, legal to drive. It’s your responsibility to know when your MOT is due and to book one before your current MOT certificate runs out. On average an MOT test takes 45-60 minutes. If your car fails the test and you need your car repaired this service will take longer.
How much is an MOT?
The maximum cost of an MOT for a car is currently £43.68 as set by the government. However, the actual cost can vary from garage to garage, which is why it pays to shop around for the best possible price.

What is checked during your car’s annual MOT
There are many checks carried out in an MOT to make sure your car is roadworthy, and these can be grouped into eight categories.
- Lights, reflectors and electrical equipment
- Steering and suspension
- Brakes
- Tyres
- Seat belts
- Vehicle body and structure
- Exhaust, fuel and emissions
- View of the road
